Dates in History
2002—Chechen terrorists stormed a Moscow theater centre at Dubrovka during a performance of the musical Nord-Ost, taking an estimated 1000 people hostage, mostly guests and staff members of the theater.
Threatening to blow up the building, terrorists demanded immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Chechnya. The standoff ended three days later, on October 26, when Russian riot squads raided the building. All terrorists were annihilated, 128 hostages died in the takeover, almost all as a result of a gas that was used by federal forces to subdue the terrorists.

1958—Russian poet and writer Boris Pasternak, author of the world famous novel Doctor Zhivago, is awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
The award is for his important achievement both in contemporary lyrical poetry and in the field of the great Russian epic tradition. He accepts the prize first, but later is forced by the authorities of USSR to decline it.
